National Railway Museum - The Great Hall

The National Railway Museum in York, England is the largest railway museum in the world, responsible for the conservation and interpretation of the British national collection of historically significant railway vehicles and other artefacts. The Museum contains an unrivalled collection of locomotives, rolling stock, railway equipment, documents and records.

This is the Great Hall where the Museum displays some of the star exhibits of the National Railway collection. The Great Hall was built in 1958 as a depot to house the new diesel locomotives that were replacing steam on Britain's railways. Prior to the opening of the National Railway Museum in 1975 the diesel depot was converted to enable a large number of historic locomotives and coaches to be displayed. Inside the Great Hall you can follow the story of the train from Rocket to Eurostar.
