The HST project took tried and tested diesel technology and created a dedicated 125mph passenger train that delivered levels of comfort, reliability and regularity out of all proportion to the £800,000 investment it required. Since their introduction in 1978 most HST units have travelled the equivalent of to the moon and back in service miles and three years into a new century, and they're still going strong.
