National Railway Museum - The Mallard

The National Railway Museum in York, England is the largest railway museum in the world, responsible for the conservation and interpretation of the British national collection of historically significant railway vehicles and other artefacts. The Museum contains an unrivalled collection of locomotives, rolling stock, railway equipment, documents and records.

On 4 July 1938 No 4468 Mallard charged down Stoke Bank at 126 mph, attaining a world speed record for steam traction that still stands today. Mallard, a London & North Eastern Railway A4 Pacific was officially carrying out 'brake testing' when it made this record run. Unofficially, the LNER was determined to take the world record from Germany. Within the year Britain was at war with Germany and such frivolities were forgotten.
