Rocket is probably the most famous locomotive in history and this 1935 sectioned replica allows us to see what made it so special. The multi-tube boiler, blast pipe and direct drive from cylinder to wheel, were crucial innovations that laid the foundations of steam locomotive practice for the next 150 years. When Rocket won the Rainhill Trials in 1829, it proved that the steam locomotive was no longer a lumbering brute of the coalfields, but an instrument that would change the world.
