The National Railway Museum in York, England is the largest railway museum in the world, responsible for the conservation and interpretation of the British national collection of historically significant railway vehicles and other artefacts. The Museum contains an unrivalled collection of locomotives, rolling stock, railway equipment, documents and records.
Britain's royal family has been associated with the railways since 13 June 1842 when a young Queen Victoria travelled from Windsor to London with the Great Western Railway and declared herself 'quite charmed' by the experience. From that date Britain's railway companies have provided special trains for their royal passengers, and for railway staff the opportunity to 'work' a royal train was considered a special honour.
