The National Railway Museum in York, England is the largest railway museum in the world, responsible for the conservation and interpretation of the British national collection of historically significant railway vehicles and other artefacts. The Museum contains an unrivalled collection of locomotives, rolling stock, railway equipment, documents and records.
Opened in 1999, The Works provides an open workshop for the conservation, maintenance and restoration of the National Railway collection. In this space, locomotives, carriages, wagons and every kind of railway equipment is given the expert care and maintenance it needs to survive into the future. Supported by a host of displays and interactive exhibits, The Works tells the story of the working railway.
