The street is packed with independent shops, restaurants, and of course - tourists!

The 15th century timber framed buildings lean into each other and almost touch in the middle, the Shambles are mentioned in the Domesday book, making The Shambles probably York's oldest medieval street.

Half way down Shambles is a Shrine to Margaret Clitherow, wrongly thought to be her house (the real house is now thought to be 10 Shambles), the council bought this building and made a shrine.

Tourists from all over the world come to visit The Shambles, one of the best preserved medieval streets in Europe.

This narrow street was home to the butchers of York and takes its curious name from the 'shammels', the shelves which butchers used to display their meat. You can still see examples of these heavy shelves in front of some of the shop windows and the hooks where the meat used to hang.

Today you are more likely to find bookshops, restaurants, clothing and sweet shops. In high season the street is full of people who came just to stop and look at the fine examples of medieval architecture. Some of the buildings date back to 1350 and the timber-framed buildings lean towards each other across the street.

Don't let the crowds put you off from visiting the Shambles. It's an attraction not to be missed.
