Just off Parliament Street, towards the Shambles, you can find the permanent Newgate Market. York's main open air trading complex since the Middle Ages, it has moved around several times and arrived on the present site in 1964. Clothing, dried goods, fruit & veg and a wonderful atmosphere: the only place to get fresh local produce and real bargains.
