Stonegate, York

The main shopping street in the York Minster region of the city, this ancient paved way has its origins in Roman times, for it heads towards the site of the Military Headquarters Building. By the Middle Ages, it was being used to transport stone from barges moored near the Guildhall, direct to the Minster.

It is a lively pedestrianised street, popular with street entertainers: musicians, mimes, jugglers and artists. There are many ancient buildings, mostly converted to gift shops, books shops, restaurants and the like. The rare beam pub sign of the 'Old Starre Inn' dominates the thoroughfare. Other notable features take a littel more finding: the Norman House, the 'Little Devil' Corbel and the entrances to some of York's 'snickelways'.
