York Racecourse is one of the Premier Horse Racing tracks in Europe having won a Flat Racecourse of the Year Award and also came out top in The Times Newspaper survey of all Britain's racecourses. For the first time in June 2005 the Royal Ascot meeting was held at York, as the Ascot track was closed for extensive refurbishment.
The Ebor Festival or Ebor Meeting, including the Juddmonte International, Yorkshire Oaks and the Nunthorpe Stakes is held at York Racecourse every year in August and is always a popular meeting.
Often referred to as "The Ascot of the North." York Racecourse stands on free land known as the Knavesmire, and has race meetings each month between May and October.
Knavesmire, the site of York's Racecourse is reputed to have been the marshy land or area where knaves or felons were executed. The original racecourse stand dates from 1964 but part of John Carr's Grandstand of 1754 remains.
The City of York traces a fascinating history back to Roman and Viking times. Today it is a bustling city growing as a commercial, tourist and regional centre. A fine range of restaurants, shopping opportunities and attractions including the Jorvik Viking Centre and National Railway Museum as well as the history of the Minster, Castle and City Walls, supplements York’s extensive selection of excellent hotel accommodation.
