The Deltic prototype, built in 1954 as a speculative venture by English Electric, was the most powerful single unit diesel-electric locomotive of the age, with two Napier Deltic 18-cylinder two stroke engines developing a total of 3,300 horsepower. Intended as an export winner, it raised little interest outside the UK, but the 22 production series Deltics introduced in 1961/2 had a major impact on Britain's East Coast main line services, cutting hours off journey times between London and Edinburgh.

Throughout the 1960s Deltics were the speed kings of the East Coast main line and no less than six are preserved, including 55002 Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry in the national collection.
