York Central Library. York Central Library was opened on 23rd September 1927 by the Right Honourable The Earl of Elgin and Kincardine, Chairman of the Carnegie United Kingdom Trust and President Elect of the Library Association.
Prior to 1927 the Library had been housed in the building which is now York Dungeon on Clifford Street.
The library stands on the site of the former Infirmary of St. Leonard's Hospital. Originally St. Peter's Hospital founded by King Athelstan, St. Peters was destroyed by fire in 1069. The building was then rebuilt in stone and renamed by King Stephen. Some of the ruins of St. Leonard's Hospital can be seen in the library grounds.
Library members can borrow material from and return it to any of the 15 libraries in York and the Mobile Library. The Central library and 10 branch libraries offer free access to computers to library members.
If you would like to join YorkÕs library service, take some proof of your name and address (utility bill, bank statement, driving licence etc.) to a library. If you are under 16, your parent or guardian will need to sign a form. Membership is free of charge. :)
